1. The question you asked after the panel discussion (10 marks)
Original question: What challenges might healthcare organizations face when implementing the 80/20 model, and how will they ensure that the protected 20% development time is used effectively by nurses? Simone answered this question during her presentation, so I had to come up with the following question during her presentation:
How will the 20% of the 80/20 development model be organized? Will it be initiated by the nurse or initiated and directed by the nurse leaders?
2. How did you feel it was answered by (10 marks)
Simone answered my question well by discussing how the 20% of professional learning could be initiated by either the nurse or the clinical nurse leads. She discussed various scenarios for both situations. She could have gone into more detail using a unit-specific example of how nurses could discuss and implement the education they want to learn during the 20% professional learning time.
3. What went well? (5 marks)
Multiple areas of Simone’s presentation went well. Firstly, her voice was at a good tone and appropriate volume for all listeners to hear. Secondly, I enjoyed her personal story about working as an agency nurse and her experience with unit nurses. Thirdly, I enjoyed her visual breakdown of the 80/20 modified version, with the various types of working shifts.
4. What can be done better? Identify 2 or more areas of improvements (10 marks)
I identified two areas for improvement. First, I felt Simone spoke too quickly. It was challenging to follow along while focusing on her talking and the content on her slides. Secondly, I found her slides simple and unengaging. Although some of her slides included tables and pictures/graphics, I felt that overall they could have been more visually appealing.
5. What can be done to improve? (Provide 3 or more suggestions for improvement). (15 marks)
First improvement: Speaking too quickly
I would suggest the following to help her slow down her speaking during her presentation. I would recommend previewing her presentation and listening to the speed of her voice before her next presentation. See if she can follow along without hesitation. Second, I would suggest summarizing her content more effectively so you don’t have to cover as much. This will allow her to slow down her speech and not feel rushed to meet the time limit. Lastly, I would suggest deliberate pauses during her presentation to help her slow down.
Second improvement: Simple slides
I would suggest adding pictures and visuals to improve the look of her slides. Colourful visuals help keep the audience engaged in the presentation. Secondly, I would recommend using fewer words on the slides. Noted that Simone had very wordy slides accompanied by extensive verbal content as well, which made it difficult for the audience to stay focused on what was being presented. Trying to be concise with content on the slides, removing unnecessary words and only including necessary content. Thirdly, too many slides, which made it challenging to stay focused. Try the 5 5 5 rule of presentations: 5 words per line, no more than five lines per slide, and no more than five text-heavy slides in a row. If followed, this will improve audience engagement and enhance content retention.
